The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) Australia is the leading external dispute resolution scheme for the financial services sector. FOS offers fair, independent and accessible dispute resolution for consumers who are unable to resolve complaints with member financial services providers.

About the Role

We are looking to appoint a number of sessional Ombudsman over the next 12 months to work as part of our busy Decisions Team, specialising in general insurance related matters.

The role would suit partner or senior executive level legally qualified professionals with a strong track record of significant achievement and a background in the insurance sector. You are likely to be at a stage of your career where you have an interest in using your well-developed skills and experience to contribute towards a broader community service role.

Your role will be to make decisions, individually or as part of a panel, on our more complex disputes in accordance with the relevant Terms of Reference. You will also be expected to provide professional and technical leadership more broadly within FOS as part of the Decisions Team.

Skills and Experience

Strong analytical skills, the ability to quickly get to the heart of complex issues, and being able to efficiently handle a busy caseload with a clear outcomes focus are key requirements of this role.

Candidates are required to hold legal qualifications and have a significant track record of achievement at partner or senior executive level within the insurance industry or a tribunal, EDR scheme, regulatory agency or related business entity. A background in one of more of FOS's other jurisdictions such as credit, banking and investments is also highly desirable.

Your business or professional dealings over the last three years should not create any reasonable perception of possible bias in favour of either financial services industry members or consumers.

The FOS Board will make the appointments on a sessional or other basis as appropriate for a fixed-term period.
